Who Are You?
By Batsheva 1/22/10
If I ask you,
Who are you?
What is it
That you'll say?
Will you tell me
What you do?
Or in some other way
Will you reply?
Perhaps to try
To simply give your name.
But to me,
That seems to be
An answer rather lame
For if your dad and mother
Had named you something other
Than what they did,
Would you have been
A different kid
Or just the same
But with a different name?
Some other answers
You might give
Could be just to describe
How you feel and how you live
A member of which tribe
Where you come from
What you do
Who you love and who loves you
The name you got
The name you took
What you like
Or how you look
Each answer only goes so far
In telling me just who you are
But one response, admittedly,
Would be considered odd,
And yet it's true and perfect:
You're a wondrous child of God.
